MOSCOW THEATRE, BOLSHOI THEATRE
From the very outset of its existence the Bolshoi Theatre was in the centre of Moscow cultural life. The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre is one of the oldest in the capital of Russia. It was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century and officially opened in 1825. According to the opinions of the contemporaries, the theatre was the best in Europe. The troupe of actors that was invited to perform on the stage of the theatre formed earlier, in 1776, and that year is recognized as the year of the theatre s foundation.
The stage of the Bolshoi Theatre witnessed such premiers as Life for the Tsar by Glinka and ballet performances Sylphide, Giselle, Esmeralda and some others. In 1856 the grandeur building burnt down, but it took only 16 months to put up the new impressive theatre. The five-circled hall of the Bolshoi Theatre is famous for its perfect acoustics and can seat up to 2,150 spectators. The hall is decorated with gilded moldings and red velvet, which imparts to it special splendour and solemnity.

Marinsky Theatre
The Marinsky Theartre, named in honour of Maria Fedorovna, the wife of Emperor Alexander II, was built by architect Cavos in 1859-1860. The building was constructed on Teatralnaya Square, and since then the square was recognized as the centre of the cultural life of Petersburg. The hall of the Mariinsky Theatre is one of the most beautiful in the world. It is decorated with splendid three-circled chandelier and vivid plafond, designed by master Frachioli, famous curtain by Alexander Golovin, and gilded decorations and statues. The opera and ballet troupe of the Mariinsky Theatre is famous all over the world for its professionalism, talent and mastery. The repertoire includes such classics as Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, the Nutcracker, the Swan Lake, works by Mozart, Verdi and Rossini, operas Don Juan by Mozart and War and Peace by Prokofiev. Mussorgsky Theatre
Originally St. Petersburg Mussorgsky State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre was called Mikhailovsky in honor of Emperor Nicholas I's brother. The permanent troupe of actors appeared only after the Social Revolution. That's when the theatre got its own style and aesthetic credo. The theatre attracted the audience with its unusual performances, as its actors were always searching for the new ways of performing. On the stage of the theatre premieres the operas by Prokofiev and Shostakovich took place. Famous Meyerhold staged several performances. Such masters as Shalyapin and Kshesinskaya gave performances on the stage of the theatre named after great Russian composer Mussorgsky. Today, the repertoire of the theatre includes operas and operettas by Russian and foreign composers performed by masters of the genre (The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, Boris Godounov by Mussorgsky, La Traviata by Verdi, Die Fledermaus by Straus). St. Petersburg Philharmonic
Saint Petersburg Academic Philharmonic named after D. D. Shostakovich is the oldest in Russia. It is two hundred years old. The history of the Philharmonic goes back to 1802 when Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Society, the first one in Europe, was created. Nowadays Saint Petersburg Philharmonic consists of the two concert halls, famous all over the world for wonderful acoustics and beautiful interiors. The Philharmonic concerts are held in the Grand Hall, which is the former building of the Assembly of the Noble, and in the Small Hall, which is the former Engelgardt House.
The Grand Hall of the Philharmonic was designed by architect Jacquot in 1839, and the facade was constructed by famous Rossi. The Grand Hall can seat more than 1,500 spectators. From the 40s of the 19th century the hall has been the centre of the music life of Saint Petersburg. Today the Grand Hall of Saint Petersburg Philharmonic is considered to be one of the best concert halls in Europe, and it is very honourable to perform on its stage.

Nikolaevsky Palace
The Nikolaevsky Palace was constructed in 1853-1861 by famous architect Andrey Stakenshneider for Emperor Nicholai's son Grand Duke Nicholai. The classic-styled residence was set in Annunciation Square (the Square of Labour nowadays) in the prestigious and costly district of Saint Petersburg, not far from the Admiralty and Palace Square. After the Grand Duke's death in 1891 the Palace was given over to the Women' Institute named after Grand Duchess Xenia, sister of Emperor Nicholai II.
The Revolution of 1917 made the Palace the property of common people and their representatives - local trade unions. In accordance with the communistic traditions it was renamed the Palace of Labour. Today the walls of the carefully restored Palace preserve the memory of the more than century city's history. Its lavishly decorated halls have witnessed the daily life of the Grand Duke's family as well as the meetings and celebrations of the Soviet authorities.
The Palace houses the Nikolayevsky Art-centre that is aimed to represent the unique Russian culture to guests and residents of Saint Petersburg. Every night the bright folklore show that is comprised of the best folk companies' performances is held in the Concert Hall (the former ballroom) of the Nikolayevsky Palace.

Hermitage Theatre
The Hermitage Theatre, the oldest building of the Winter Palace Complex, was built on the site of the former Winter Palace of Peter I in 1711-1723. The theatre itself was built later - in 1783-85 to the design by Gakomo Quarenghi and finished in 1802. The theatre building is connected with the main palace by an arch over "Zimniaya Kanavka", the canal between the Moika River and the Neva River. The facade and hall decoration of the Hermitage Theatre is unique and represents a classical masterpiece of palace architecture of the XVIII-th century. Today the hall of the Hermitage theatre and all premises are completely reconstructed. Ornamentation of the hall, lines of armchairs, a ceiling, a system of illumination and acoustics are exactly restored. The geometrical proportions of the hall area and the stage allow to giving the artists necessary and large space, that is enough for staging ballet performances and provide the excellent acoustics at the Hermitage Theatre. The performances of the best Petersburg and Moscow ballet dancers and ballet troupes are arranged on this stage.
Bolshoi State Saint Petersburg Circus
The circus located in Fontanka River Embankment was opened on the 26th of December, 1877. It was designed by architect Vasiliy Kenel and became the first stone circus in Russia. The magnificent building decorated with sculptural compositions was considered to be one of the best circus constructions in Europe. The arena of the circus witnessed splendid performances by the world-famous clowns, gymnasts, animal trainers and jugglers. The traditions of Saint Petersburg circus were carefully preserved through the years, and nowadays the viewers are welcome to enjoy fascinating, bright and colourful shows.
