Novgorod
Veliky Novgorod, one of the most ancient cities of Russia, was founded in the 9-10 centuries. Throughout many centuries, Novgorod was a political centre of vast territories stretching up from Baltic lands to the Urals Mountains. For a long time Veliky Novgorod had been the largest centre of culture in Russia, where chronicles, books, hagiographies, deductive literature were created. Many outstanding monuments of medieval architecture and painting including old churches, temples and cathedrals have been preserved in the city. The outdoor Vitoslavlitsy museum of wooden architecture presents some excellent examples of wooden structures from different parts and suburbs of Novgorod. The visit to Novgorod helps to get acquainted with everyday life of the Russian people, who lived on the territory of Novgorod principality in different times. The right of Novgorod to choose its own princes, granted in the middle of the twelfth century, attracted princes to the Novgorod throne. That provided favorable conditions for uniting Russian lands that had been divided by feudalism. The annexation of Novgorod republic to Moscow Principality at the end of the 15th century resulted in the united Russian State with Moscow as its capital.
Novgorod is the cradle of Russian republican and democratic traditions. In the course of over 600 years, up until 1478, all important decisions on local life and foreign policy were taken by the veche – an ancient parliament comprised of representatives of the town's aristocratic families. At critical moments in Novgorod history, all people took part in the veche.
Novgorod's unique political structure, spiritual freedom, and territorial independence were highly conducive to the evolution of culture and art. The town's military power, its remoteness from dangerous southern borders, and successful campaigns against church reforms and heresies enabled them to preserve a unique complex of architectural monuments with frescoes of the 11th - 17th centuries, as well as the oldest Russian manuscripts, chronicles, acts, and icons.
All of this history you can see in Novgorod today! You can visit the unique complex of ancient Russian architectural monuments of the 11th - 17th centuries, including the Cathedral of St. Sophia, the Holy Wisdom of God - the oldest survived Russian stone monument. It was built in 1045. In the interior of this palladion your attention will be drawn to the historically formed iconostases, ancient mural paintings, and icons. These are national treasures of Russia. Note the famous icon of the 12th century, Virgin of the Sign, which was returned to the Cathedral in 1991, when services were resumed, and other relics of Byzantine, Western European, and Russian art.
Many experts of Russian art consider Novgorod to be a Russian Florence; no other Russian city has managed to preserve so many ancient architectural monuments adorned with wall murals. You will see this during your visits to the many churches and other architectural monuments of the city.
Novgorod Veliky (the Great) was one of the earliest settlements in the northwest of what eventually became Russia. It emerged as a political center for Slavic and Finno-Ugric tribes in the mid-9th century, becoming a town in the middle of the 10th century.
The history of Novgorod is closely linked with all major stages of Russian history. When the state of Rus was just in the making, the Novgorodians invited Scandinavian Prince Rurik to keep law and order, thus giving rise to the Prince Rurik dynasty that ruled over all Russian lands for more than 750 years.
In the early 10th century, the Novgorodians staged war campaigns against Constantinople so as to secure equal trade with the Byzantine Empire. This ultimately resulted in an integration of East Slavic tribes into the Kievan Russian state.
The adoption of Christianity at the close of the 10th century turned Novgorod into a powerful ecclesiastical centre.
Museums
THE ARCHBISHOP'S (FACETED) CHAMBER
The Archbishop's (Faceted) Chamber is all that remained of the former Archbishop's residence. Its condition is typical for a medieval building which has undergone many changes of looks and purpose. Today it does not look very special - a rather plain small building. However, if we imagine removing 3 meters of the cultural layer and added in the 19th c. vestibule, and then putting back in place pairs of lancet windows and perspective arched portals - then we would see a building most uncommon for ancient Russian architecture. This follows from the fact that the Chamber was built to the order of Evfimiy II by Russian and German architects together.
From the 16th to the 19th c. the Faceted Chamber was used as a church. Today it hosts permanent exposition of ancient Russian decorative, applied and jewelry arts, and the nearby Ioann's corpus is occupied by an exposition of ancient Russian embroidery of the 11th—17th cc. Both are open daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter, except Wednesday and last Friday of a month.
HISTORICAL MUSEUM
In the lower part of the building survived arched basement rooms of the 16th c. — the remains of the major administrative building in Novgorod of the 16th—17th cc. It was damaged during the 1686 fire when the entire southern part of the Kremlin burned down.
The contemporary structure and looks of the building formed in the early 19th c., in the classicism epoch. It became rather grand in a solemn way, with its cast iron lions guarding the central of the three entrances.
In the 19th c. there was a cobble-stone square between the Offices and St. Sophia cathedral. That was where parades and other festivities took place, and here in 1862 was erected the Monument to the Millennium of Russia — the symbol of the ancient Russia meeting the new one.
Today the right half of the building of the former Offices hosts the main historical expositions of the museum, including «History of Novgorod Land» and «Ancient Russian icons». They are open daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Tuesday and the last Thursday of a month
MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
The Museum of Fine Arts contains a collection of Russian paintings of the 18th-20th cc.
The collection started forming right after the 1917 revolution. Many paintings, among them works by Rokotov and Kiprensky, were confiscated, restored and turned to the museum.
The decision about founding a Painting Gallery in Novgorod was followed by the act of giving the museum works from the Central museum repository, the closed museum of the former Emperor's Academy of Arts and the palaces in and around Saint-Petersburg. Also, after the closure of well-known country estates of Vybiti, Marjino, and Gruzino, their contents re-stocked the collection of Novgorod Museum of Old and New Arts. This way all major artworks of the academic and innovation trends appeared in the collection. Today there are over 6 thousand items in the funds of the Museum of Fine Arts, most of them paintings and graphics. The exposition presents works by such well-known Russian artists as Borovikovsky, Kramskoy, Brullov, Vrubel, Serov, Repin, Benua, and others. There are also paintings and graphics by such well-known contemporary Novgorodian artists as Zhuravlyov, Nepomnyaschiy, and Varentsov.
The interesting and valuable feature of the collection is that it offers a look over a wide range of all major trends and styles, from «Russian classique» to modern.
The Museum of Fine arts is situated in the building of the former Noblemen's Assembly, on the Sophiyskaya square. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except Monday and the first Thursday of a month.

Cuisine
Historic cuisine of Veliky Novgorod exists mainly in literary sources. Chronicles and epic poems tell us about such victuals as «ognivo» (thick rich soup with fish fins), elk lips, white meat of lynx, baked swans and bear paws. However, these are fancy treats from a boyar or wedding feast. Common people ate much simpler things. The table was usually laid with cold collations and a pot with first course - shchi (cabbage soup), assorted vegetable soup or uha (fish soup). Actually, back then «uha» was the name for any thick soup, not necessarily made of fish. People of the Novgorod Land also ate cooked grains, oat or pea mush, dried and soaked berries, salted mushrooms, and fish of different kinds. Whitefish, bream and even sturgeon were plentiful in the Ilmen' Lake and local rivers, and such delicacies as caviar and smoked fish fillet were quite common and affordable.
Fish arrived at the table in great variety and cooked in a number of inventive ways - boiled, baked, fried in nut or poppy-seed oil, grilled, poached and stuffed. Vegetables were few in kinds but multiple in application. Cabbage, cucumbers and turnip were the favourites. Steamed turnip became proverbial as a symbol of simplicity and cheapness of a rural meal, since it more or less cooked itself in the oven while the family was working out in the fields. Stuffed with cottage cheese and garlic, it is still a gourmand's delight.
Naturally, Russian cuisine has changed a great deal over centuries. Nevertheless, today restaurants of Veliky Novgorod treat their guests to many of the traditional dishes, cooked in accordance with the old recipes as well as to the modern culinary creations.
Bon appetit, dear guests!

Souvenirs
First of all, a difference should be clearly stated between actual souvenirs and items of applied arts (crafts). Souvenirs of the Novgorod Land include copies of the archaeological finds, such as 14th-18th cc. birch-bark scrolls, seals and jewelry. Bracelets, pendants and charms made of convex copper and German silver disks are an exquisite gift. They are decorated with engraved winding ornament of animals and plants, which repeats the ornament on the items found during the excavations. Also popular are charms made of wood, ceramics and pebbles and bearing pagan symbols.
Crafts and various kinds of applied arts take their roots from the ancient times. Valday bells are famous not only throughout Russia, but also in foreign lands. Today their silvery sound brings joy and merriment in the hearts, just as it did centuries ago. The legend has it that the grand veche bell of Novgorod broke down into thousands of small pieces, when it was taken away to Moscow, and so in every little bell there lives a particle of the great bell's soul.
Another well-known craft offers various boxes finely made of birch-bark and lavishly decorated with fretwork, engraving and applications. Depending on the size and shape, the boxes can be used as jewelry cases, foodstuff containers, handbags, or glass-holders. The birch-bark items are light and attractive and seem to keep the warmth of the artisan's hands. They are perfect for storing food, since the tea retains its flavour in these boxes, and the grains remains untouched by insects. They are also very pretty and vary greatly in size and imaginative design.
In Novgorod you will find painted porcelain and ceramics of unbelievable beauty, vases and candle-holders made of natural materials, traditional Russian lacquered miniatures.
Another special local craft is embroidered linen, produced in the town of Krestzy near Novgorod. The word "krest" from which the town's name derives, means "cross", and the embroidery consists of small web-like crosses. Wonderful tablecloths, napkins, bedclothes look like intricate snowflakes covering slowly a winter forest and come in different sizes and colours - not only traditional white, cream and light-gray, but also bright red, green, sky-blue and extravagant pink. Linen dresses and blouses are ecological, stylish and perfect for a hot summer.
Souvenir gallery "Sloboda" occupies the Philharmonics building in the Kremlin. It offers a wide range of typical Novgorodian and generally Russian souvenirs - lace, embroidery, jewelry, dolls, birch-bark and wooden boxes, paintings and art books, and many, many other interesting things. The gallery also hosts art exhibitions. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Art gallery "Na Torgu" is a small two-storey pink building in the Yaroslav Courtyard. The first floor is occupied by a shop of souvenirs and paintings, and an exhibition hall is located on the second floor. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
